报告摘要

Recent observations reveal that the observed luminosity range of red supergiants (RSGs) in young open clusters is broader than predicted by single-star evolution models, suggesting that binary evolution may play a key role. In this study, we present the first large-scale, detailed binary evolution models to predict the properties of RSGs in young open clusters. We identify which evolutionary scenarios contribute to which RSG populations. Based on this, we propose a more robust approach for estimating cluster ages compared to previous studies. Our findings confirm that in a coeval population, the luminosity of RSGs can span up to a factor of ten, as a consequence of mergers between two main-sequence stars. However, our results also indicate that binary effects alone cannot fully explain the number of RSGs with luminosities up to three times higher than those predicted by current single-star models. This discrepancy has important implications, and we suggest several avenues for future observational and theoretical studies to help resolve it.
