报告摘要:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quasiperiodic eruptions (QPEs) are intense, repeating soft X-ray bursts with recurrence times about a few hours to a few weeks from galactic nuclei. In this talk, I will first review QPE observations, then explain why QPEs are commonly believed to be the result of collisions between a stellar mass object (a stellar mass black hole or a main-sequence star) and an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in galactic nuclei and what can we learn from QPE timing. Finally, I will introduce a proposed multi-target X-ray telescope, CATCH (Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters), which will play a vital role in future QPE detection and long-term monitoring.
Zhen Pan (潘震) is now an associate Prof. at T.D. Lee Institute and Department of Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He got his Ph.D at University of California, Davis, then did his postdoc research at Perimeter Instituter for Theoretical Physics. His research currently focus on gravitational wave astrophysics, including perturbation theory of compact objects, astrophysics of compact binary formation and statistics of gravitational waves.
