Abstract:
V838 Mon erupted at the beginning of 2002 becoming an extremely luminous star with L = 10^6 Lsun. V4332 Sgr experienced an outburst in 1994 whose observational characteristics resemble those of the eruption of V838 Mon. Among various scenarios proposed to explain the nature of these outbursts, the most promising is a stellar merger event. I will discuss the observational properties of central objects and their surroundings in the post outburst phase. We draw particular attention to molecular bands of TiO, VO, AlO, ScO, YO, and CrO (recognized for the first time in V4332 Sgr) identified in their spectra, in absorption in V838 Mon, and in emission in V4332 Sgr. Combination of very high column density and low excitation temperature (300 - 500 K) in V838 Mon allows to identify many molecular features, e.g. unobserved earlier forbidden transitions of TiO. The main object in V4332 Sgr is surrounded by a circumstellar disc, which is seen almost edge-on so the central star is obscured. The geometry of the system explains the presence of the molecular emission lines through radiative pumping in gas of kinetic temperature as low as 120 K. Enhanced abundance of AlO analogous to sporadically observed in Miras reported earlier is less evident if actual thermochemical constants are applied. Some indications of the presence of shocks are seen in kinematical properties of the highly excited AlO vibronic bands.
